| | Health Insurance for Citizens Of Other Countries Living and/or Working in Germany |
| | |
| | Are you planning to work in Germany or already working or living in Germany? Then, unless you have an insurance from your home country covering most of your risks, you will probably require some form of health insurance. In many cases you will be forced to automatically register with an insurance institution from the German "public" health insurance system. Here is an overview of the options you usually have and some advice on which insurers to contact: |
| | |
| | "Public" Health Insurance Companies - "Gesetzliche Krankenkassen" - obligatory for most salaried employees in Germany |
| | |
| | Most salaried employees working in Germany will automatically have to join a "Gesetzliche Krankenkasse" (one of a quite large number of semi-public health insurance institutions). Here are a few facts about these health insurance institutions: |
| | |
| | | All salaried employees in Germany have to join one of them if their gross income is below 3.562,50 EUR/momth (This is the current limit for 2006). |
| | | The insurance contributions here are calculated as a percentage of the respective monthly salary. |
| | | Although the services of these public insurance institutions are very similar in nature, the monthly contributions can vary within a certain bandwidth (currently between about 12 percent and 15 percent of the gross salary). So it is important to compare as one may easily save 20 or 30 Euros per month depending on the choices one makes. |
| | | This public form of insurance has two big advantages compared to private health insurance: 1. The contributions do not go up with rising age. 2. You can insure a whole family with parents and children all with the contributions taken from the salary of just one adult (father or mother). If both father and mother work this advantage is greatly reduced as contributions will be taken from two salaries in this case. For childless working individuals or working couples the advantage in comparison to private health insurance is greatly reduced or vanishes. |
| | | The biggest disadvantage of this kind of German insurance is that there are many medical services it covers only in a basic or reduced fashion or not at all. These services include: dentistry, glasses and contact lenses, physiotherapy, most natural and alternative therapies etc. Also these insurers as a rule only pay for a basic service, not for a private room in the hospital and not for a personal appointment with the professor or doctor of your choice. |
| | | Still as salaried employees really do not have a choice we are including 3 links to "Gesetzliche Krankenkassen" who currently offer comparatively low rates. Remember, there are dozens of Euros to be saved per month depending on which of them you choose whilst services are very similar. |

| | Supplementary Insurance Cover for What Public Health Insurance Does not Pay |
| | |
| | There are various insurance models that promise to pay for all the services that public insurers do not cover - whilst all other services will still be covered and paid by the public health insurance. Most such supplementary insurance tariffs are only available to foreigners after they have lived in Germany for 3 years. We have, however, identified at least one such option for you. Please contact us for further details. |

| | |
| | Private Health Insurance |
| | |
| | This option is usually available to you in 3 situations: 1. you live, but do not work in Germany (but have sufficient funds to buy private insurance), 2. you do self-employed work in Germany or 3. you are allowed to choose between public and private insurance as your salary is higher than 3.562,50 EUR/momth. |
